Warren Bodow’s DEELMAYKER Wins Prize in Dallas

Congratulations to Warren Bodow, whose play DEELMAYKER has won third place in the 3rd Annual McKinney Repertory Theatre’s New Play Competition. It will receive a reading tonight at 7:30pm in McKinney, Texas, just outside of Dallas. I have worked as Warren’s dramaturg to develop the comedy for the past two years. The play received readings in New York City and Tucson, Arizona, before receiving this national award.

McKinney Repertory Theatre DEELMAYKER by Warren bodow

DEELMAYKER, the main character’s email address, features the loveable Bernie Harris, a successful 65-year-old media broker who wants to keep on truckin’ but is challenged by a client base that is shrinking and a business environment that is pushing him to the sidelines.  As he struggles to win the trust of a much younger client, and with problems in his marriage, Bernie strives to make the perfect deal, and learns if he has what it takes to face the new realities of a world growing young.

Warren G. Bodow is a “second-act” playwright, having turned to this craft following a thirty-year career in broadcasting. He has written six plays, all of which have been produced in festivals or as fully-staged box-office productions. His second play, RACE MUSIC, was performed on Theatre Row and received critical acclaim from The New York Times in 2009. A native of Syracuse, New York, he graduated from Syracuse University and served as chair of the Newhouse School Advisory Board. He lives with his wife, Ellen, in New York City and in Tucson, Arizona. His book THREE SHORT PLAYS ABOUT LOVE was published by Hamilton Dramaturgy Press in 2011.

HDP Author’s Production in Tucson

Best Place to See Original Plays

In the Tucson Star

Where can you see exciting new plays being produced around these parts? Almost anywhere, it turns out, because Tucson’s theaters produce an extraordinary number of new works, often by local writers. This year saw The Rogue’s The Decameron by Patrick Baliani, and Ten Chimneys by Jeffrey Hatcher at Arizona Theatre Company. Beowulf Alley Theatre Company had Fronting the Order by Warren G. Bodow and Head: The Musical by Kevin Fry, in addition to their annual Page on the Stage Festival. Winding Road Theater Ensemble produced Toni Press-Coffman’s Armor, and Live Theatre Workshop’s Etcetera series presented Christopher Johnson’s The Eating Disorder Talent Show, and High Crimes, a musical by Damian Lemar Hudson. Borderlands Theater had two premieres: Kara Hartzler’s No Roosters in the Desert and Martin Zimmerman’s White Tie Ball—as well as the annual update of A Tucson Pastorella. Add to that the locally written escapades at the Gaslight Theatre, and the very first Tucson Fringe Theater Festival, and you have a theater community that truly deserves commendation.

THREE SHORT PLAYS ABOUT LOVE by Warren G. Bodow

Hamilton Dramaturgy Press has just released a new trio of plays by Warren Bodow. The book is available in paperback and as an eBook through http://www.lulu.com.

A collection of three 10-minute one-acts, THREE SHORT PLAYS ABOUT LOVE offers an evening of pithy views of Valentines Day’s impact on a diverse set of characters. SWEETS FOR MY SWEET demonstrates how a guy’s plans for a gift for his lover are overturned by a cunning stranger, to the stranger’s benefit. MY OLD FLAME poignantly portrays a long-married couple dealing with the existence of a Valentine’s Day card signed by neither of them. In STAY TUNED a woman sits alone in her big-city apartment waiting for ‘him’ to call. When flowers arrive, we witness her unexpected reaction and an even more surprising conclusion.

Taken together, THREE SHORT PLAYS ABOUT LOVE offers a half-hour of laughter, irony, turn-about and reconciliation. The playwright conceived the trio for theatre companies wishing to determine a timely way to cultivate audiences and donors with a mid-winter evening of theatre, food and drink and have everybody home by nine o’clock.

Staging, casting and lighting requirements are simple and easily managed by theater companies large or small. All three plays have been successfully staged for paying audiences. Casting: SWEETS FOR MY SWEET, 2W, 1M; MY OLD FLAME, 1W, 1M; STAY TUNED, 1W, 1M (offstage).
